The Magic of Purpose

Comments Off

The magic of purpose is the quickest and most effective way to turbo-charge your life. Everyone is different, made up of different genetics, different upbringings, just as your personality is different from mine, so too is your purpose.

You know that there is more than the here and the now, you realize that you have a reason for being here. But do you know what that reason is? What drives you to get out of bed every morning?
Do you know what could happen if you knew…are you ready to know?

Do not be mistaken to think that your purpose is something that you receive. It is not something that you receive. It is something that you are serve or contribute with intention backed behind it as your burning desire for it.

So what are you working towards?

What is your underlying motive for this?

When you know what you are working towards and you know WHY you are working towards it, the world can create magic in order for your purpose to come about.

Don’t think for a second that you don’t have to do anything, and that the world will serve you your purpose on a silver platter. You still have to work for it, for it is in the journey that the most is learnt. Give it all you’ve got, and heaven and earth will shift that will bring about this desirable force that grants your purpose.

Your purpose is granted and that is so…

Below is a recipe for Sarah Liddle:

Recipe for the coach

2 cups of a Love for Life
2 tablespoons of determination
3 teaspoons of confidence
a dose of personal belief
a dollop of compassion
and a sprinkling of peace.
All mixed together with a burning desire to coach and educate humanity.

Many years ago my grandfather, had a small farm and
chickens. One morning he sent me out to the chicken coop to
collect fresh eggs. He became concerned when I didn’t return
after a shot interval. When he came looking for me I jumped
with joy, but he saw tears in my eyes and noticed that I was in
an adjacent empty chicken coop, which could be entered only
through the same door as the occupied coop.

When he noticed my distress and asked, “What was wrong?”
I told him tearfully, “that nasty rooster, who was now docile, in
my grandfather’s presence, came pecking after me and all
the hens started cackling, which scared me, and I ran into the
next coop for safety.” He took me by my hand and we walked
right by the now quiet nasty rooster and comfortable nesting
hens. We sat under the apple tree, and he related the
following story. “Did you notice how that rooster and hens
behaved when I came in? Totally different than when you first
came in.” I shouted, “The rooster and hens seemed to
pounce on me.”

My grandfather then said, “That’s a new rooster the neighbor
gave me. All your life you are going to come across people
who will act like that rooster and hens. Only in different ways!
It’s natural for that rooster to protect his coop and his hens.
The rooster is the leader and the hen’s followers. Same with
people! It doesn’t matter whether they are men or women.
There will always be people who will try to lead your life and if
you let them, you will become like the hens.”

“But to be the leader, you have to first be able to lead your
own life and be the rooster of your actions. You can be like
the rooster leading the hens, only they will be people. Most of
us in life are followers, like the hens and some stay hidden in
their own chicken coops, like you did.”

“That doesn’t mean that the rooster in us is bad or nasty, like
the one you just experienced, that’s just the way some people
naturally are, at least in their own minds. But did you notice
the respect and the way he quieted down when I came in? He
saw me in his perception as a bigger, stronger and probably
smarter rooster than he is. Which I am and so are you. But
you didn’t think or believe it strong enough for him to perceive
it. Next time before you walk in, believe that that rooster is
just a tiny, sweet chirping chick, and those hens are laying
beautiful golden eggs, that we can have for breakfast.”

Then he did the smartest move and took me back to the
chicken coop, walked away and said “now go in and pick
those golden eggs for breakfast.” Strange, even while I was
still scared I boldly walked into the chicken coop, ignored the
rooster and picked up our golden eggs for breakfast.

As we ate breakfast, he chuckled “don’t you ever forget,” as
he whimsically smiled at my grandmother, “that you will
always meet the roosters and hens in your life. But it’s the
rooster in you and all of us that separates you from the he
and she hens! And will keep you “From the Chicken
Coop”.

Corporate brainstorming often fails because participants don’t enter into it in the proper spirit. There are two phases of the creative process: the imaginative phase and the practical phase.

The first thing to remember in phase one of a brainstorming session is this: all ideas are good. No matter how lame they may sound initially, write them down without comment.

You must establish an unthreatening environment in order to get your participants to loosen up and start throwing any ideas out. Consider these tips for better brainstorming:

First, identify the problem. It is often best to outline this ahead of time in written form so that everyone comes to the session with the problem defined.

Next, set the stage and the rules. Tell participants that the brainstorming session is for generating as many ideas as possible and that the person who comes up with the most ideas, not the best, will be rewarded. The only rule for brainstorming is this: no one criticizes anyone’s ideas. Positive thinking is the rule of the day.

Discuss the problem for a few minutes. Do you have it properly defined? Are you asking the right question? Here’s an example: about three hundred years ago there was a plague that first sent victims into a deathlike coma from which most never recovered. One man - an exception to the rule - was buried alive. The townspeople didn’t want this to happen again. One group had the costly idea to place food and water inside and an air hole from the casket to the surface. Another group’s idea was simple and low cost: place a 12-inch spike in the top of the casket so that when the lid closed there would be no question about the occupant’s status. Both answers were right, but the questions they asked were different. “What should we do if we bury someone alive?” and “How can we make sure everyone we bury is dead?”

Now, develop as many ideas as possible. Think quantity, not quality. You can sort out the wheat from the chaff later in the practical phase.

Finally, the session moderator is there to keep things moving. If things bog down, pull out these trusty questions. Why not? What if? What rules can we break? What assumptions can we drop? What if budget was not an issue? What if we looked at this backward from the desired result? Is there something we can eliminate in order to reach our result? Could we add something to the process?

Follow these tips and you’ll have better, more productive brainstorming sessions and creative thinking just might become a part of your corporate culture.

Having been a professional coach for over 16 years, and having been in over a dozen coaching relationships as a client during that time, I’ve had the opportunity to examine what makes coaching so powerful and effective.
It’s my personal view that one of the most beneficial tools that can enhance a client’s life is coaching distinctions. You can think of a coaching distinction like a lens through which you look at life, and in the process life shows up differently.

For example, when my mechanic, Dale, looks under the hood of my car he sees a whole different world than I do. I see mostly dirt and oil and maybe the oil dip stick and radiator cap. But because Dale has many more ‘engine distinctions’ he’s the one I’m going to call on if my car won’t start in the morning.
In short, the more distinctions we have AND USE, the more powerful and effective we can be in our lives.

WORKING IN vs. WORKING ON YOUR LIFE

Now, let’s look at a specific coaching distinction that you can begin immediately to use in your own life. It’s actually modified from a business distinction I first heard about from Michael Gerber, author of THE E MYTH.
In THE E MYTH (www.e-myth.com) Michael points out that one of the major blind spots that keep many entrepreneurs stuck in growing their business is that they spend almost all their time ‘working in their business’ and almost no time ‘working on their business.’

I’ve found this to be true for many of my clients in regards to their own lives. They’re living in their lives, often frenetically so, but rarely do they devote any real quality time in ‘working on their lives,’ and it shows — Big Time.

Does that sound familiar to you? Try on this distinction right now to see what you see about your life. And in case you need a bit more clarity on the distinction, let’s see if we can further distinguish between ‘living in your life’ vs. ‘working on your life.’

Living in your life - You are awakened by your blaring alarm in the morning after a restless night of sleep because you were worrying about _______ (fill in the blank). You rush to get yourself ready for work, pumping yourself up with coffee, and catching just a bit of the morning news that verifies once again to you that life is going to hell in a hand-basket. You fly out the door, drive to work, where you quickly look at your to-do list, rushing around to meet deadlines, etc. You finally finish your day, not at 4 or 5 pm but more like 6 or 7. You drag yourself home, prepare dinner, turn on the TV so you can veg out for a couple hours, before dragging yourself to bed, to start the whole process over.

OK, granted this may be a somewhat exaggerated example, but truthfully I find for many people it’s a pretty accurate reflection of their daily lives.

So, what’s missing in this scenario? Any time for “Working On Your Life” –
What I found is often the missing element that will make a huge difference in the quality of your life is carving out time for working on your life, or as I like to call it, purposefully playing on my life. This can include:

* Working with a life coach which provides you with an excellent support structure and focus

* Daily time for meditation, prayer, or reflection

* Regular journal writing time

* A weekly meeting with yourself where you’re specifically evaluating how to live more on purpose, then taking actions consistent with that self coaching session

* Quarterly or twice a year retreat time like an extended weekend or longer.

Now, I’m not saying you need to do all of these, at least not at first. I do highly recommend you pick at least one of them and ‘carve out’ the time for it. And I use that phrase, carve out, intentionally. If you wait to find the time, you won’t. You’ll need to commit to giving yourself this gift, and while it may be one of the most valuable gifts you give yourself, don’t be surprised if a part of you resists accepting it. (That’s your Inherited Purpose trying to maintain control of your life. “Ignore that little old man behind the screen.”) Accept the gift from yourself.
