Your Camera Kit and Film/ Media Selection
While making pictures along the Maine Coast, a considerable number of folks have talked to me about snapping their boats. Fundamentally, they needed to know the genuine systems to making their vessels look so good, particularly while at anchor. In truth, there aren’t any real secretsjust reliable methods that are quite well known to several executives. These systems are my pleasure to share with you. When doing fine photography of your ship, you are confronted by 4 points for concern. Those areas are the vessel itself, your camera kit and film / media selection, the coast in which you’re employed and your lighting conditions. If you approach each element separately, then blend them at the time you make your photographs, you ought to have little difficulty. It surprises me how frequently this is overlooked. Think about your camera as the most beady-eyed, enormous mouthed, nit-pickin, purity-of-the-breed sea surveyor you’ve ever faced and you can do nicely. Any decent camera that will permit you to work without getting in your way will be more than satisfactory for this kind of photography. I haven’t any private lens choice for boats, except that, when possible, my preference is always for the shortest serviceable focal length, not round the other way.
Remember, it’s your boat…you can get up as near as you like. Film should be the lowest ISO rating you can nicely work with.
Folk using digital medium should use the camera’s setting that yields the most important file. Any good digicam in the four to five magapixel range will do a pleasant job if you don’t forget to fill your frame. The coast in which you’re employed is the very next thing to think about. Quiet coves are my favourite. Whatever you do though, don’t permit the setting to fight the vessel for your viewer’s attention. The following concern is your lighting conditions. In the final analysis, good photography is typically about the light. All film and digitized media build contrast. You can correct this by simply making your photographs with low contrast illumination. It comes as a surprise to several, but early morning light, besides many times being fantastic, is mostly less contrasty than mid-afternoon overhead sun.
