There are many ways to ensure a good night’s sleep in the physical sense, but sometimes our minds wander when our heads hit the pillow and we are unable to ’switch off’. Here are some tips to alleviate the occasional sleepless night:

  • Do not watch any action-packed television programmes or films right before bed, as these have been proven to increase our heart rates.
  • Make a mug of your favourite caffeine-free beverage. This can be any sort of herbal tea, or even some hot water with lemon or ginger in it.
  • Do some slow stretching in your comfiest pajamas. Make sure to take your time, and concentrate on your neck and back (or anywhere you tend to hold tension).
  • Ask your partner for a neck rub or foot massage. Anything to help you relax.
  • If you’re going over a mental checklist of things you need to do the following day, write them down and put that list away from your bed. Once it’s on paper, it won’t be on your mind.
  • Invest in silk bedding and/or silk duvets. These help to regulate your body temperature throughout the night, keeping you comfortable and preventing you from waking in the middle of the night because you are too hot or too cold.
