More Noise

Comments Off

“Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with painful effort, vain striving for the wind and feeding on it” (Ecclesiastes 4:6 Amplified Old Testament).

Dear readers, I realize I am a fanatic about all the cacophony in the world. I have a favorite bookstore I haunt, or used to, until the national chain succumbed to the cry of the masses to numb our minds with pop music, not even classical music which at least soothes the savage beast within us. The first time I heard it I appealed to the powers, but was told that mine was the first complaint. So much for the last place on earth I could enter and feel at peace!

I culled the following gem from a Bible commentary:

I. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A QUIET SPIRIT.

The habit and disposition of quietness need not be accompanied by torpor. There is, indeed, a quietness of sleep, as there is also a silence of the grave. But in the passage before us the quiet spirit is directly connected with life. The body may be busy while the spirit is quiet; nay, the mind may be nimble and alert, even full of activity, while yet the spirit is at rest. Observe, then, the marks of a quiet spirit.

1. Peace. There is peace within the soul, and therefore quiet. The turbulent spirit is like a mutinous crew that may make tumult on board the ship while the sea is as still as glass, and the peaceful spirit is like a well conducted crew that works in quiet while the sea is torn with tempest.

2. Patience. The quiet spirit does not complain under chastisement, nor does it angrily resent unkindness. The psalmist was “dumb” under calamity. Christ was led as a lamb to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:7).

3. Unostentatiousness. Some give more show than service, and make more noise than profit. Eager to attract attention, they “sound a trumpet before them” (Matthew 6:2). Not so the quiet in spirit, who labor in silence, content to be obscure so long as they know they are not living in vain.

II. THE BLESSEDNESS OF A QUIET SPIRIT.

It is here set forth as a source of life. No doubt fretful restlessness wears out the life of the bad. Placidity makes for health. Moreover, the life that is dissipated in noise produces no good, and therefore does not collect the means of its own support. The quiet in spirit best make a livelihood. Further, certain special advantages of this quietness may be noted.

1. Depth. “Still waters run deep.” We can look far into the quiet lake, while only the surface waves of one that is fretted with cross winds can be seen. The calm, brooding soul knows depths of thought and secret experience that are unfathomable to the foolish, restless, noisy soul.

2. Strength. The silent forest grows strong. The mind is made vigorous by patient endurance. One who is calm is master of the situation, while another who is fretted and flurried feels lost and helpless.

3. Fruitfulness. The calm, strong, silent soul, vigorous and yet unostentatious, ripens best the fruits of experience. Such a one does most real work.

4. Beneficence. Noise vexes the world, and a restless, complaining spirit is a weariness to men. The quiet spirit breathes a perpetual benediction. Its very presence is soothing and healing.

III. THE ATTAINMENT OF A QUIET SPIRIT.

No doubt there are great constitutional differences in this respect, and while some are naturally or by ill health restless, irritable, demonstrative, others are naturally quiet, self-possessed, even reserved. Due allowance must be made for these differences before we attempt to judge our brethren. Still, there is a measure of quietness attainable by the use of the right means, viz.:

1. Self-mastery. When a man has conquered himself, the tumult of civil war in his breast ceases.

2. Faith. To trust God, to know that he is doing all well, to seek and obtain the help of his Holy Spirit, are to find the secret of peace and quietness of soul.

3. Love. Selfishness makes us restless. “A heart at leisure from itself” can learn to be patient and calm.

Prayer: Please, Father, save our sanity (SOS) from all the racket!

There are three reasons that you might have missed a payment on your credit card: either you can’t afford to pay, the payment didn’t get there in time or you just plain forgot. For whatever reason, there’s one thing you need to do, and quickly - get on the phone.

Then, apologise like you’ve never apologised before. Don’t panic, stay calm, but make it clear to the customer service representative that you’re very sorry. Say that things like this never happen to you. If you just forgot, then tell the truth about what happened. But if you can’t afford to pay, then you should say so too.

You will be surprised at how sympathetic credit card companies can be if you phone and apologise. After all, the sensible ones want to keep you paying interest to them for a long time to come, so it’s not really in their interest to punish you.

Remember to show your appreciation if they let you off. Promise that it won’t happen again. Whatever you do, don’t get angry or frustrated. You need their goodwill and to be in their good books.

However, if deemed necessary, you may also want to show that you are willing to transfer your balance elsewhere if they won’t let you off this one mistake. Credit card companies will usually be more accommodating to your request once you make this known.

You need to do everything you can to persuade them not to add your late payment to your credit report. Any negativity in your credit report may adversely affect your applications for any credit. Remember that any late payment can be a black mark against your name for as long as ten years.

On the other hand, if the worst happens and it does get onto your credit report, don’t worry excessively. As long as there’s only one late payment in a year or so, it doesn’t matter too much. It’s the people who consistently pay late who get the truly terrible credit ratings.

In the future, remember to make payments early. This goes especially for the people whose payments didn’t make it in time. It is just not prudent to wait until the day before the deadline to make your credit card payment. Many things can go wrong at the last minute.

In a nutshell, it’s generally a bad idea to let bills of any kind stack up until you get around to them. Review your bills regularly, pay on time and you’ll live a much less stressful life.

Bad credit is a temporary phase that you can get yourself out of. By
managing your credit more efficiently, you can start raising your credit
score today. Using your home equity line of credit, you can eliminate
bad debt, such as high interest credit cards, personal loans, or overdue
bills. With your new loan, you can then begin to eliminate your debt
and improve your cash flow.

Raising Your Score By Eliminating Bad Debt

By consolidating your short term debts with a single home equity loan,
you can eliminate your unsecured debt’s negative effect on your credit
score. The more maxed accounts you have, the worse your credit score.
Having a number of open unsecured loans will also pull down your score.

Once you have paid off your credit cards, look to close your most
recently opened accounts to reduce your available credit. By doing this, you
will boost your credit score and ability to apply for new credit. Just
remember to keep your oldest accounts, since they establish your
payment history.

Better Rates With A Home Equity Loan

Home equity loans have better rates than credit cards, even with bad
credit. With some careful searching, you can find a sub-prime lender who
will offer you near market rates and favorable terms.

With your lower rates, you can begin paying off your principal sooner,
all the while paying the same amount monthly. You can also decide to
extend your payment schedule, giving you a smaller monthly bill to deal
with.

Fast Track To Better Credit

With your bills consolidated and better control over your finances,
your credit will soon begin to improve. If you are just dealing with late
or missed payments, your credit can be in good standing in a year. With
more serious credit problems, such as bankruptcy or foreclosure, you
can have good credit standing in two years.

Try using a Recommended Bad Credit Home Equity Lender listed on ABC Loan Guide, an informational loan website about different types of loans. That way, you can make sure the lender is reputable and competitive in their rates.

Once you have good credit, plan on refinancing your home equity loan
and possibly your mortgage. With your new credit score, you can qualify
for conventional rates and lower your loan costs even more. Just
remember to research your lenders to make sure you are betting the best
available financing.

The Story

As a child growing up, one of the many life lessons instilled in me was to wash your hands before eating and after using the restroom. As a child I often played in the dirt and places where germs customarily manifested. Another lesson I learned growing up was when introduced to new acquaintances always shake their hands. It is said to be a polite thing to do, and demonstrates a sign of friendly reception.

I can’t remember the first time I shook someone’s hand, but as an adult I have learned the different handshakes I detest and those I most appreciate. It is frequently said that the handshake is a window into the personality. For example, on the phenomenal television show “Survivor” during the last episode the tribal council selects the winner of the contest. Before the vote, seven remaining tribal members were given an opportunity to ask a question or make a statement to the remaining first and second place contestants.

In the heat of anger one tribal member named Susan verbally lashed out at Kelly who had the deciding vote to cast her from the contest. Susan’s anger stemmed from an alliance that was broken as Rudy, Richard, and Kelly (the last three members) began to fend for themselves as the contest came to its season finale. But after the winner was chosen, the seven tribal members went to give their congratulatory hugs and handshakes. Of course Susan went over to shake hands with Kelly for placing second. While 40 million viewers watched, Kelly refused to shake Susan’s hand. So what’s in a handshake?

Dr. Wade Horn, President of the National Fatherhood Initiative said, “The handshake establishes contact; it sends a message. If I am having an important meeting the handshake will tell me if the meeting was successful.” Dr. Horn went on to explain further that, “If there is a firm, tight, and strong grip at the end of the meeting then the meeting was successful. If not, then that person is disappointed and not pleased with some aspect of the meeting.” He closed by saying “When someone shakes my hand and doesn’t let go then that’s too personal.”

But what does that say about billionaire and former presidential candidate Donald Trump? Mr. Trump, who does not like to shake hands, was met with some controversy when refusing to shake hands on the 2000 presidential campaign trail. The New Republic reported that Donald Trump is “A germ freak. Trump has said he doesn’t want to touch the diseased masses. His campaign hands out half-ounce bottles of hand-cleaner, with Trump’s web-site address taped to the necks.”

Evan Burfield, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer for the Netdecide Corporation, said “It’s like driving on the highway. People do things that are so uncivilized, things that you they would never do in person. It’s the same way in a corporation; there’s a protective layer that a handshake removes for a second. It lets you understand that you are talking with another person who needs to be treated like a person with trust, respect, and forthrightness.”

Evan added that, “Today we are operating in a cross-gender environment. That man-to-man power struggle handshake doesn’t work with women. It’s a positive to have women involved with everything we do; it softens a lot of the male aggressive rituals.” And speaking of rituals, the handshake has origins more anthropological than historical. Because they carried knives, spears, and rocks, when land was scarce and sacred males would extend their hand to show that they were not attempting to kill their neighbor. To add to that, the classical Greeks were under the impression that the right hands were mysteriously connected to the heart.

The Greeks may not have been very far off point. The handshake is a symbol equivalent of a promise. It becomes a virtue of the word and value of the person extending it. It is an agreement sealed with honor before the lawyers get involved. The handshake is a very valuable tool and, since in business often the communication is one-to-one, it’s flexible and indicates that an agreement has been reached on current dealings. It says that all information and intentions have been disclosed so that the value of the handshake is not diminished. The lesson here is that the handshake historically has carried symbolic importance. It is good to know what your handshake is worth. It’s your word and it says you can deliver on your promises.

Kevin Robertson, president of Vision of Life consulting firm said it best”Today a man or woman is judged on their handshake, eye contact, and the display of confidence.” This is a far cry from the classical Greeks, or prehistoric man who when all they had to worry about being stabbed or hit with a rock. There were no lawyers and no contracts, just the bond of a man’s word.

The Lesson

What’s in a handshake? The handshake encompasses trust, honor, and communications, follow through and follow up, and represent good faith negotiations. After all, the word of a man and woman still lies in the bond that they will ultimately create.

Women are a mystery, even to ourselves. That’s because we manage our lives through our emotions, unlike men, who are more logic driven. Sometimes she’s really into sex and other times she’s pushing you away. What’s a man to do? Here are some ideas to make it easier.

Before sex begins, she needs to feel loved, appreciated, and respected. Starting out with sincere compliments, maybe a nice dinner or something similar, and kissing are generally the way to go. There may be times when she’s in the mood to skip the preliminaries, but for the most part, a little romance goes a long way.

Moving on to foreplay, be sure she has at least one orgasm. That’s a hard and fast rule. If you don’t, she’s not going to like the rest of it as much as she should. If you don’t know how to give her an orgasm, three simple words, stimulate the clitoris. Ok, got it? Use your tongue or a vibrator, whatever it takes to get her going. Trust me, the better you are for her, the better she will be for you.

All the hype about stimulating the g-spot deserves a mention here. Yes, g-spot stimulation is great but if your only doing that and ignoring the clitoris, your not really accomplishing much. Not sure where the g-spot is? There is tons of information out there to tell you but I suggest getting a g-spot vibrator and using that while stimulating the clitoris. She will like it, trust me.

Wanting to give her multiple orgasms? As soon as she has her first orgasm, stop stimulating the clitoris for a bit. Use the vibrator and stimulate the g-spot. In a matter of minutes she will be ready for clitoral stimulation again. The clitoris needs a minute or so after orgasm or it will be way to sensitive to touch. You should be able to tell by her reaction when to begin again.

What? She doesn’t want anything to do with a vibrator? Yes, I know there are women out there who obviously have never tried them so don’t know what they are missing. If this is the case, start with a small one that won’t intimidate her, or buck up buddy and be prepared to work a little harder. If your intimidated by a vibrator, you shouldn’t be. It makes your job easier and it certainly will never be a replacement for you.

Ok, the next part all depends on what you want. If you want to go straight to intercourse, no problem, she is ready by now. However, if you want something else, for example felatio, then maybe you better make sure she is totally satisfied. When she’s pushing you away and begging you to stop, then you can be proud of a job well done. Hopefully she will be inspired to return the favor. If she needs a hint, use some flavored massage oil, pour some chocolate sauce, or spray some whipped cream on yourself.

What about an orgasm during sex? Yes, women can have them, but they aren’t the mind blowing ones that come from clitoral stimulation. If she wants one, or you want her to have one during sex, try a finger vibrator. It slips on the finger and doesn’t get in the way. It’s best if she does it, because you’re already pretty busy.

Ok, it’s over. Your both exhausted and all you want to do is roll over and go to sleep. Wait. Take a minute to either A. Tell her how great it was or B. Tell her you love her, or C. both. Hug and kiss her, wrap your arms around her, then you can go to sleep. Of course, she’s probably going to want to talk, but if you’ve done these things, she’s not going to be too upset when you nod off.

You’ve likely heard this before… “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Says who? I mean come on. If prevention was so popular why would we see so many “cures” being marketed. Why? Because of basic human nature that’s why.

We play the odds, we ‘wait and see’. We figure that if it breaks then we’ll fix it. Afterall, if it never breaks maybe the prevention was never required - who can tell…

Prevention is the smart thing to do - no doubt about it. But mankind is not all about making ’smart moves’, we make decisions based on emotion, ego, and occasionally, sometimes logic.

For every one person who ‘prevents’ something, there will be many, many more who will gladly wait and see - and then PAY handsomely for a cure.

Educating the masses is a noble thing to do, but it won’t necessarily make you wealthy. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof: TOOTHPASTE.

We all know that brushing your teeth is a good way to prevent tooth decay and gum disorders yet the toothpaste manufactures don’t try telling us this… no way, that’s too boring. They gave up trying to educate us about these things years ago.

Now it’s all about SEX!

They tell us it “freshens our breath”, “makes our ’smile’ whiter” and of course this improves your sex appeal (of course they don’t actually say this - but we all know that’s what they’re selling).

Think CURES not PREVENTION and your bank account will love you for it.

One last point. This whole cure vs. prevention argument is like the “teach a man to fish” story. Sure we could all learn to fish and have fish for life…

But that’s what grocery stores are for right - to ‘BUY’ fish not ‘CATCH’ them?

Tattoos are not new. They have been around longer then recorded history. It just seems I have been noticing them a lot more lately. I don’t know if that was because I started to take an interest or there are a lot more people getting them.

Before I decided to get my tattoo, I did some home work. I don’t come from a background of drunken sailors, so my only thoughts were those dark and dingy, back alley shops you see on late night TV. As most of you reading this can guess, I was wrong. There are clean and reputable tattoo shops even in my town. Some of these tattoo shop are even open during the day light.

I did a lot of internet searching and have learned a lot about tattoos and tattoo shops. Mostly I learned not to prejudge. But some of the things I learned I thought would be worth passing on to my kids and to whoever is deciding to get a tattoo.

Tattoos can put you at risk for contacting many diseases, such as HIV, Hepatitis and even tuberculosis. Tattoos can bring on skin infections such as impetigo, dermatitis and possibly an allergic reaction to the tattoo pigment. To minimize the risk you really need to follow a couple of common sense rules when seeking out a tattoo shop.

Stop by a tattoo shop and look and see if they are using single service equipment. Make sure all needles and tubes are individually packaged, dated, sealed. The person who tattoos should use guidelines created by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the handling of body fluids. And of course, the person doing the tattoo should be wearing gloves.

After you get your tattoo, don’t pick or tug on the area of the tattoo. Clean with soap and water not with alcohol. Tattoos are sensitive to sun; use SPF 30 or greater to protect them. Also, use antibiotic cream for several days. The body considers tattoos as an open wound.

I hope anybody considering a tattoo or who has a tattoo and is getting another will just take a few precautions.

Remember friends don’t let friend’s get a tattoo while under the influence of alcohol or after just meeting Mr. or Ms. Right.

Satellite Dish companies are stepping up the war for new customers on the airwaves and the cable companies are answering with their own advertising campaigns. It seems like we are bombarded every day with advertisements from the television providers asking for our money and trust in their product. So who has the best deals?

Let’s look at the individual players in this “war”.

Satellite Dish providers sell you a dish that attaches to the roof of your house (or some other convenient location) that can “track” the provider’s satellite and bring the signal into your home. Most of the dish companies are offering the dish as a free incentive to subscribing to their service so this cost is absorbed by them, which is very nice. The usually ask you to sign a contract for 18 months and they offer a relative low monthly payment for basic channels. (I am old enough to remember the only thing available was black and white reception and only 3 channels. Now you have several hundred channels available to watch. It must take hours just to find out what is on them all). If you want the other extra nice program packages it is an additional monthly cost. The addition of what you really want, movies, sports, etc. These can really bring the monthly cost up to the point of threatening your budget. Additional incentives to get your business are: Lower monthly charges for the first couple of months, DVD and HDTV. Some of these add-ons are only offered free for the first couple of months and then their charges are added to you monthly payment. Watch these as they will add up quickly. Is it really necessary to have everything? Just order what you can afford.

If you should want to move during your contract period it is nice to know that they will move your equipment to your new residence and you do not have to go through all the trouble of starting over. There may be a fee for this service but you never have to worry about moving to an area where you cannot get reception and that is really nice. They frown on your trying to cancel the contract and there is usually a stiff penalty so be sure that you want to pay the monthly fees before you sign up.

The Satellite Dish programs are all very good and offer installation for several rooms, free installation, free upgrade and outstanding customer service.

Cable providers offer pretty much the same packages but there are some draw backs to their offers. The most disturbing is the lack of coverage in large parts of the country. I live in an area where the cable is available across the street but not on my side of the street. That seems a little strange to me but that is the way it is and nothing I can do or say will change it. Cable offers to relocate your service if you move within their territory for coverage and they will “refer” you to another cable company if you move out of their territory, but not all cable companies are the same and you may be looking at higher costs and fees that are not in your best interests.

Let me ask you a question, where does the cable company get their signal? Answer, from satellite dish companies. Now it seems reasonable to me that if you cut out the middle man and go straight to the provider you should save money. What happens if the satellite dish companies decide to raise the rates for the cable company? Your rates go up. (I think that the government has a control on this so it is unlikely that it will happen, but then I thought the government had control over the rates of the phone and utilities companies and my rates seem to go up every year anyway).

The good old fashion antenna in the attic is another choice, reception is not very good, no additional perks like DVD or HDTV but the cost is right. ZERO Cost.
If you grab hold of the antenna wire, stand on one foot with your thumb in your mouth and turn just the right way reception will improve, but it is hard to watch the TV and stand on one foot very long so maybe you can wire up the dog.

So what is the conclusion here? Which is better for you? As always it comes down to what you can deal with. Maybe our parents were right after all. We watch too much TV, go outside and play. Costs less and is better for us, but since that is not going to happen I think the best option is Satellite Dish. Reasonable cost, good program selection, good incentive offers and can be moved to any location in the world.

Children are naturally photogenic. Ive worked in studios and children are so easy to photograph. What I hear from parents is that they dont think that their kids are that easy to photograph. Thats only because they dont know some basic tips.

1. Young children especially infants take beautiful photos while they are asleep. Keep the light natural avoid flash if at all possible. Keep the image tight on the child and crop out distractions. For infants when theyre awake youre better off having another person in image, it gives the child someone to interact with and you can crop the shot to keep the other person out of the image or you can keep the adult and child in the photo.

2. Toddlers look best when they dont know that youre taking their photo. Candid shots are the way to go for this age group. Keep your camera handy and when they start doing something cute snap the photo quick. Remember your child doesnt have to be looking directly into the camera to take a great photo. Dont ever say to the toddler, Oh how cute, now look here. It wont happen.

3. Children ages 4 plus are really good at sitting for photos. But if youre going to dress them up make sure that they are comfortable and dont put them in some outfit they hate, it will show in the image. Crop tight on your subject, keep the light natural, and if youre using a toy to get their attention make sure that it makes them laugh and doesnt scare them. (I learned that lesson the hard way.)

4. Older children are really good at dressing up for photos. The hardest thing will be getting a natural smile from them. Say, cheese is a sure fire way to get a fake smile. Most of us learned young to smile automatically at that cue. Here you have to get silly. One time I was working with a young boy and his older sister. She was a natural smiler and loved being dressed up. He was not happy and kept pulling at his tie. His mother straightened it for the tenth time. I posed them and addressed the young boy I said, Now on the count of three I want you to say, I hate this tie! His sister smiled surprised at what I said, and he grinned. I took the photo. He then screamed, I hate this tie! Again both smiled wide and I took a second photo. The images turned out beautiful.

I hope these tips help you to take better photos of your child. With a little practice and a few tips youll see better family photos immediately.
